Shawn Ray wurde am 9. September 1965 in Fullerton, Kalifornien geboren. Im Alter von 17 Jahren in der High School, fing Shawn Ray an sich für Sport zu Interessieren. Um mehr Masse für den Football zu gewinnen, fing er zu trainieren. Kurz danach traf er den 2fachen Mr. Universe John Brown an, der ihn für den Sport Bodybuilding inspirierte. Von diesen Moment an löste Shawn Ray auf der Bühne eine Welle von Siegen aus, einschließlich des Teenage Mr. America den er 1985 gewann und 1985 den Jr. Mr. World. Während seiner professionellen Karriere hat es nur zwei Bodybuilder gegeben, die er nie schlug. Du hast dich vom aktiven Sport zurückgezogen. Was waren deine Beweggründe? Ja, ich bin von den wettkämpfen 2001 zurückgetreten. Ich hatte eine 14 –jährige Pro-Karriere hinter mir und fand meine Erfüllung in den Wettbewerben. Ich traf meine zukünftige Frau 200 und wollte mit ihr eine Familie gründen. Und für die nächste Phase meines Lebens wollte ich nicht mehr am Pro-Bodybuilding teilnehmen. Ich war 36 als ich zurücktrat. Im Januar dieses Jahres wurde ich in die IFBB Pro-Bodybuilding Hall of Fame aufgenommen.
Du warst immer jemand, der das sagte, was er dachte. Wie findest du die Entwicklung in der Bodybuilding Szene? Ich persönlich bin nicht aufgeregt wegen den sportlichen Wettkämpfen, weder 1984 als ich begann, noch 2001 als ich es beendete. Die herausragenden Bellies, Hernias und Kidney Probleme sind nervend und die allgemeine Lage der Sportler ist einfach nicht beeindruckend und gar nicht inspirierend. Zu viele Drogen und nicht genug Ästhetik und Symmetrie.
Wenn du in der Jury gewesen wärst von Mister Olympia 2006, wie hättest du entschieden? Sag mir deine Platzierungen? Ich war Spielleiter für die Show und hatte keine gute Sicht auf die Sportler. Ich persönlich fand Dexter & Victor besser als alle anderen. Hättest du Ronie auch auf den zweiten Platz gesetzt? Ich hätte Ronie auf den dritten oder vierten Platz gesetzt, hinter Jay, Victor und Dexter.
- Du bist jetzt ein professioneller Wettkampf Promoter. Wird es wieder ein Shawn Ray Colorado Pro Am Classic in 2007 geben?
Ja, das zweite jährliche Shawn Ray Colorado Pro Am Classic wird in Denver stattfinden. Es wird am ersten und zweiten Juni sein. Die Teilnehmerliste richtet sich nach Arnold classics. Einige gute Namen kann ich schon bekannt geben: Dennis James, Darrem Charles, Johnny Jackson, Idrise Ward El, Jason Arntz, Chris Cormier, David Henry, Marcus Haley und viele mehr.
Neben der Förderung des Sports, bist du auch ein erfolgreicher Geschäftsmann. Wie sehen deine Zukunftspläne aus? Paul Dilet hat einen neuen Bodybuildingverband gegründet, der sich WBFF nennt. Wie findest du die Idee? Würdest du es unterstützen? Ich freue mich für Paul, aber ich denke nicht, dass es Auswirkungen auf das Pro Bodybuilding haben wird, in dem ich noch eine aktive Rolle innehabe. Es scheint so als seien Kanadier dafür prädestiniert, Verbände zu gründen. Ich stehe nicht mit ihm in Verbindung oder bín involviert in seinen Verbänden.
Werden wir dich auf der FIBO dieses Jahr sehen? Ich werde im April auf der FIBO am Freitag, Samstag und Sonntag sein. Ich werde dort meine neue DVD promoten und Fotos mit meinen Fans machen.

1. You have retired from the active sports. What were the reasons?
A) Yes, I retired from competition in 2001. I had a 14 year pro career and had my fill of competing. I met my future wife in 2000 and wanted to start a family and the next phase of life for me as the direction of Pro Bodybuilding was not one I wanted to be a part of at that time. I was 36 years old when I retired. In January of this year I was inducted into the IFBB Pro Bodybuilding Hall of Fame.
2. You were always the one who said what you were thinking. How do you find the development in the bodybuilding scene?
A) I personally am not excited by the physiques competing today as when I began in 1984 nor since I have stopped competing in 2001. The protruding Bellies, Hernias, Kidney problems and overall condition of the athletes is simply not impressive or inspiring. Too many drugs not enough aesthetics and symmetry.
3. If you were in the jury for the Mister Olympia 2006, how have you decided? Tell me your positioning?
A) I was the MC for the show and did not have a good look at the athletes competing onstage however, I personally like Dexter & Victor over everyone else.
Have you gave Ronnie Coleman the 2nd position?
A) I had Ronnie in 3rd or 4th Place behind Jay, Victor & Dexter.
4. You are Professional Contest Promoter now. Will there be another Shawn Ray Colorado Pro Am Classic in 2007? If so, who will be on the list of participants?
A) Yes, the 2nd Annual Shawn Ray Colorado Pro Am Classic held in Denver, CO will be on June 1st & 2nd. The list of Athletes is developing after the Arnold Classic. So far we have committed a couple good names: Dennis James, Darrem Charles, Johnny Jackson, Idrise Ward El, Jason Arntz, Chris Cormier, David Henry, Marcus Haley and more!
Next to the sports promotion, you are very successful in business. How does look like your future plans?
A) I am currently the Spokesman and Director of Marketing & Athlete Relations with Supplement Giant, VYO Tech Nutritionals in Beverly Hills, Ca. As well I just finished my 6th DVD entitled: Fitness after 40 available now @ www.shawnray.com 5. Paul Dillett has founded a new bodybuilding federation called WBFF. How do you find this idea? Would you support it?
A) I personally am happy for Paul but it doesn't really make an impact in Pro Bodybuilding of which I still have an active role in. It sounds like it is Canadian based therefore, I have no connection or involvement with it or him.
6. What would you advise our readers, who want to start bodybuilding, for nourishment and practice?
A) It worked for me, I am better because of it both mentally and physically. I gained respect for my body, confidence in all that I do, and satisfaction in finishing what I started! 7. Will we see you on FIBO this year? A) I will be at the FIBO Fri, Sat & Sun in April, Not sure of what booth but I wil lbe there promoting my new DVD, signing photo's and taking pictures with the fans!
